This scenic traverse across the red wall layer to the Dripping Springs cave is still tough going.

Description

Dripping Spring is a worthwhile destination and makes for an enjoyable side hike when traveling these parts of the South Rim. From the intersection of the Hermit Trail, the Dripping Springs Trail initially contours over flat ground before dropping steeply into the valley holding the headwaters of Hermit Creek. Starting about five minutes from the intersection, look for fossils of brachiopods, corals, and sponges along the ledges on the north side of the trail. The vegetation here is scrubby provides only limited shade. There are beautiful views of the surrounding walls and peeps into the lower reaches of the canyon. After covering some flatter ground, you'll pass the junction with the Boucher Trail.

Finally, head back towards the alcove where Dripping Spring is housed. This last part of the trail climbs steeply up a side canyon to the base of a huge overhanging sandstone cliff. Here is where the water drips out from above, down into a small pool. The season and nearby rains determine the flow. The overhanging wall provides some shade and makes this a lovely spot for a snack. If the spring is your final destination, retrace your steps back to the Hermit Trail. However, just past the springs is a faint path up the cliffs to the rim- this Dripping Springs Extension Trail is an alternate way to reach the top, but does not lead to Hermit's Rest parking area.

Flora & Fauna

Pinyon, juniper, yucca, prickly pear cactus.
