Echo and Observation Rock
[Suggest Edits]
Description
Echo and Observation Rock are interesting geologic features because you can clearly see the way in which the two lava flows consisting of different mineral profiles collided and cooled. There are stark contrasts in rock color and type in the formations, in improbable shapes that could only have been created by two liquid substances colliding.
It is very much worth scrambling both formations to feel the difference. Echo Rock is a pumice type stone, less dense than water, and it feels like climbing on styrofoam, whereas Observation Rock offers a solid dense black stone that feels like normal climbing.
All-Day Hike: Access from the Mowich Lake parking area and a good amount of hiking along the Echo Rock and Observation Rock route.
