Description

Right off the Park Loop Road, this cool rock feature should not be missed. Thunder Hole is aptly named after a small cave that is located just below the water line tucked back into the cliff that creates a "thunderous" roar when the waves and tide are right.

As a wave recedes, the cavern is exposed, and as water rushes in with the wave, the trapped air "explodes" outward creating the sound. The impact of the water can also shoot up to 40' high, making for a dramatic sensory display of sight and sound.

On the way down the path, look on either side at the rugosa rose bushes with their pink and occasionally white flowers. Depending on the season, these can be overgrown and in full bloom with plump red fruits or "hips" that are high in vitamin C and often made into jams, jellies, and teas.

Short Walk: There are a couple large parking lots across the road, but they do fill up. The free Island Explorer Shuttle bus stops here on the #3 Route every half hour between June 23 and August 31.

Family Friendly: Easy access and a great show for everyone!

The ocean was very calm so we didn't hear very loud "thunder" but still very cool!
