Description

The crown jewel of the Schoodic Peninsula, Schoodic Point offers magnificent views of the open ocean, rugged granite coastline, and Mount Desert Island across Frenchman Bay. The larger peninsula features a number of different opportunities to discover the more remote pockets of the rugged coastline and evergreen forests at a quiet, less-crowded pace than Mount Desert Island. As a peninsula, this is the only zone of Acadia National Park that is part of mainland Maine.

Schoodic Point is also a great place to see good examples of diabase dikes. This geological feature resembles long, dark, often vertical shelves or lines of rock throughout the pink granite. Diabase is a rock type very similar to volcanic basalt and it often cools between cracks in other rocks, creating these intrusions. A similar phenomenon occurs when molten magma intrudes pre-existing rock layers in a parallel formation, which is referred to as a "sill".

If you're looking for coastal solitude within the park, this is the place. Take it all in by foot, car, or bicycle, and you can even reserve a campsite for an overnight opportunity unlike any other.

On the Road: There are a number of parking areas along the peninsula, including the Schoodic Point Parking Area.

Family Friendly: Explore the rough, windswept coastline without all the crowds.
