Family Friendly Earn some awesome high desert views on this easy ridge-striding route the whole family can enjoy.

Overview

This is an incredibly family-friendly out-and-back hike that offers great bang for your buck.

Like most typical high desert routes, Timber Creek Overlook has little respite from the summer sun. Be prepared with water!

Description

The Timber Creek Overlook Trail follows along a small ridge with spectacular views of the Kolob Canyons, the Kolob Terrace, and the Pine Valley Mountains. Looking south on the far horizon, visitors may see Mt. Trumbull 100 miles away at the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

During the spring and early summer months, the Timber Creek Overlook Trial is covered in a beautiful display of desert wildflowers. A small picnic area is located 100 yards from the trailhead.

Flora & Fauna

At the lower elevations in the park, the drought tolerant plants thrive. Desert shrubs, well adapted to high temperatures, are right at home. Throughout the summer, grasses bloom and go to seed before drying in the sun to wait for the next growing season. By utilizing many different habitats, and developing ingenious ways to find shade, store water, and collect nutrients, cacti are desert specialists, abundant throughout the park.
