Description

While the site is quite popular with locals and tourists alike, few know the historical importance of Hopper's Hands. While various stories about the origin of the hands exists, the plastic hands are tracings of Ken Hopper's hands. Ken, and iron worker who maintains the bridge, noticed that many runners would hit the fence under the bridge, and turn around. Hopper though that a high five at the halfway point of a run would be much more inspirational than the metal links of the fence. The hands have been in place since 2000 and have undergone 4 "renovations" when the hands get worn.

In recent years, the hands have taken on a deeper meaning as well. It's no secret that many, nearly 1,600 individuals over the bridge's lifespan, choose to end their lives on the Golden Gate Bridge. Hoppers Hands represent a caring hand to many, and the plastic hands have come to symbolize something much greater than was initially intended.

If you're visiting the bridge, Hopper's hands are a great place to stop for a high five.

On the Road: Just steps from the Parking lot at the end of Marine Dr. Alternatively, you can park further east and walk along the Golden Gate Promenade - Chrissy Field Path.

Family Friendly: Easily accessible via parking lot and there are also dog paw prints for fido.
