Overview

This is a nice but challenging, out-and-back hike that is easily accessible from the Sedona Summit Resort Area or the parking area along Cultural Park Place.

Need to Know

This area can get pretty hot during the day. Bring plenty of water and make sure you have sun protection.

Description

This is a nice hike for those who don't want to head point-to-point and arrange for a car pickup. It combines Girdner Trail, Western Civilization, and Cockscomb Trail to get you from the West Side up to the overlook.

From the parking area, take Girdner Trail, which is fairly easy. At the junction with Western Civilization stay left leaving Girdner Trail behind (on some maps this section is called Last Frontier), and cross the creek. Watch for steep sections as they can be a little loose in places.

Stay on this trail another 0.5 mile; look for the split for Western Civilization to the right heading up toward Cockscomb Trail. Last Frontier goes left and heads south back toward town. About 3.75 miles in you'll reach Cockscomb Trail; bear left at the junction. Shortly after you'll turn left again heading for the overlook, where you'll be rewarded with good views and the opportunity to take in your entire ascent.

Return the way you came.
