Overview
The route begins on
Teacup Trail and changes to an unnamed and unmarked trail that goes cross-country directly towards Keyhole Cave. Then it's a scramble up to the shelf inside Keyhole Cave.
Need to Know
The Parking Area requires a Red Rock Pass. The Red Rock Passes are sold in three options: · Daily for $5 · Weekly for $15 · Annually for $20
Description
The Trail to Keyhole Cave begins at Sugarloaf Trailhead. At the Sugarloaf Trailhead you're able to spot Keyhole Cave way off in the distance. It is straight back and looks like a giant gaping hole in the mountainside.
Take
Teacup Trail which begins right from the trailhead parking. Follow along for a little way until you reach an intersection with
Thunder Mountain Trail, about 0.4 miles in. Continue straight past the signpost into the wash and stay on the narrow rugged trail. There are multiple parallel trails that take you to the cave.
At the base of the cave, you'll see the ledge 30 feet above you. It's a Class 3 climb up slickrock to reach it. There are varying opinions on the right or left side routes. I've done both. Once on the ledge. Enjoy the stunning views.
