Description

This trail can be done in either direction and many folks use parts of it to make enjoyable loop routes. In the winter months, this is also a popular snowshoeing destination. In the north to south direction, this steady descent is non-taxing and quite pleasant. Starting from its intersection with the Skyline Trail, head south over the broadest part of Mazama Ridge. Expect large snowfields here late into the summer. Soon the ridge narrows and travel eases through trees and picturesque meadows. Pass through a series of small ponds and tarns, remembering to look behind you to the north for Rainier views. Soon, the High Lakes trail splits off, heading west.

Arrive at the truly spectacular viewpoint of Faraway Rock. Here you can revel in incredible views of Tatoosh Range, the length of Stevens Valley and pretty Louise Lake basin directly below. This pretty cliff and nearby tarn are popular places to snack and rest. To finish this trail, continue west from Faraway Rock, crossing a feeder stream for Louise Lake. The descent steepens here until the trail ends at an intersection with the Wonderland Trail near Reflection Lakes.
