Description

Around the millennium, the property that is the Humbug Marsh unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was slated to be turn into a mixed use residential and golf course development. Plans for this controversial development sparked outrage from local communities, conservation organizations, hunter and wildlife groups, and elected officials.

They were able to stop the development from happening, and help to form the initial force behind the founding of the Refuge, the only international wildlife refuge in the nation. Now, the Detroit River IWR works throughout the 48 miles of shoreline between Detroit and Toledo to improve the conservation, stewardship, and access to open natural public areas for the over 7 million residents who live within a 45 minutes drive of the Refuge.
