Dogs Off-leash
The trail is closed February 1 through August 31 for nesting eagles.
Description
This canyon-bottom route starts off a dirt road in the open country of the badlands. To get to the trailhead, head left off Highway 20 near milepost 17, drive over a cattle guard, and take the first right to pass through a gravel storage area. Continue down the dirt road (passable by low-clearance vehicles unless it's in bad shape) to find the end of the road and the parking area. From here, the route begins.
With every step, the cliffs grow taller as you hike through twisted juniper and sage on an ancient, rocky riverbed. Dry Canyon was once a major tributary of the Crooked River originating in the Lone Mountain region. Expect spectacular views of basalt cliffs. Toward its southernmost end, the trail leaves the canyon to end in a junction back with Highway 20.
