Overview

This is a moderate difficulty hike that gives a great view of the entire Newberry National Volcanic Monument from the top of Paulina Peak. Along the way, expect steep, steady grades and a pleasant forested landscape.

Need to Know

Drinking water can be found at the start in the parking lot, while bathrooms can be found at both the summit and the visitor center.

Description

While it is possible to drive to the top of Paulina Peak, you'll feel a much greater sense of accomplishment reaching the stunning summit views on your own two feet!

Starting at the visitor center, follow the Crater Rim Trail #3957 south across the road to begin the steady climb to the summit. While the grades are gentle at first, soon the trail gains a ridgeline and begins to climb in earnest.

After grunting your way through a few steep switchbacks, the trail eventually begins to get easier as the grades diminish, and you reach the junction with the Paulina Peak Trail. Follow the Paulina Peak Trail for a short distance to the summit parking area and the revered viewpoint!

From the top, you are able to see both lakes and all the area's lava flows, as well as some stunning lava cliffs.

Flora & Fauna

You'll be mostly seeing pine trees and scattered brush for the whole trip.

Two very steep sections, but they are short and manageable. The views in the last 0.75 mile to the top are nothing short of spectacular 6.4mi — 2h 28m

Amazing hike with stunning views. took About 3 hours to hike from the road to the top of the peak. Bring hiking sticks, very steep for a long time. — 3h 00m
