Older kids can definitely handle this trail's grades and length.
Description
The School Mountain Road Trail is an old abandoned farm road that has become overgrown with time. Remnants of history can be seen along the way. The trail spans the length of the park from north to south. There is parking at either end but the north only has two parking spots. The south has much more along a dead-end road.
When hiking from the south, you have to hike down Campbell Road until you see a grass pathway on the left. Turn down here and pass through a gate. The trail is marked with white discs. You'll also see blue discs that mark the path for the
Fahnestock Trail. These two trails share the same path for about a quarter mile.
The trail is straightforward as it passes an old farmhouse. The trail starts to ascend more after this point, lined on either side with an old stone wall. At times, the trail leaves the overgrown road, but not for long. After 3.5 miles, you'll reach a trail junction with the
Wiccopee Trail and the northern trailhead in another 0.5 miles.
There are two side trails on the left (when hiking north), the
Hubbard Loop Trail and the
East Mountain Loop Trail. You can hike both or one for a nice loop hike.
