This east-side Sierra Nevada canyon is less crowded than the more popular canyons, but no less beautiful.

Description

At the end of McGee Creek Road, take the McGee Creek Trail up through shrublands and aspen groves. As the trail climbs and turns west, you hike through open meadows and pine forests beneath 12,000-foot peaks.

At 6.5 miles, the trail passes by Big McGee Lake, which is a popular camping spot.

From there, the trail heads west over increasingly alpine terrain, reaching 11,895-foot McGee Pass at 8.5 miles.

Beyond the pass, the trail descends to Fish Creek and Horse Heaven and then continues to its terminus at Tully Hole on the John Muir Trail.

River crossing about two miles in was impassible due to high waters. Beautiful hike otherwise! 4mi — 2h 00m
