Family Friendly An easy trail with scenic rock formations.

Description

As you drive into the park, but before reaching the Chisos Basin, there is a small, easy trail leading to a small gully and canyon. You can park on the side of the road in the designated area.

The beginning of the trail is across scrubland and sand, so it is marked by cairns as opposed to a typically beaten path. The vegetation includes cactus and shrubs, but no major trees, so there is not much shade; therefore, bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat.

There is no significant elevation gain or loss along the entire trail. Midway through, the trail intersects a natural gully that continues into the canyon, so avoid hiking this trail during inclement weather or if there are flash flood warnings in the area. Inside the actual canyon, you'll notice vertical cliff faces as well as slightly overturned rock rib formations that are not found elsewhere in the park. These formations can stand as tall as forty feet.
