Circumnavigation of the lake is an easy goal for children to reach. There are signs along the way that show the local flora and fauna and there are several places you can stop and splash in the lake.
You'll have to pay the park entrance fee ($5 single, $50 annual).
Description
The
Lake Trail is the easiest trail in Fort Mountain State Park. It winds its way gently around the lake, generally within a few feet of the shore. Most of the trail is 3-4 feet wide with very moderate grades and a good coating of gravel. It's easily accessible from the main campground and there is a small beach/swimming area near the north end.
It forms part of a nature trail, so there are interpretive signs around the whole lake that point out and explain some of the local plants and animals. This is a multi-use trail that's popular with other trail users, so don't try to beat the course speed record.
There are are a couple of short steep sections that novices may find difficult and the narrow singletrack along the dam at the east side may also present difficulties for newer riders.
