Overview
It is a steep climb up to the summit of Mt. Tumahunga through native bush with great views to Omaha then through more bush and farmland to Pakari Beach with a final stretch along a gravel road.
Need to Know
If you don't want to do this hike as an out and back, you'll need to organize a car to pick you up at the Pakari end of this trail as there is no public transport in this area. The road from Leigh to Pakari is very winding and turns to gravel for the second half.
Description
Starting at the car park on Omaha Valley Road, the first section on the
Tamahunga Track is through farmland up some short climbs through the paddocks using the turnstiles to go over fences. Follow the markers.
Entering the native bush, the trail is uphill most of the way to the summit. There are info plaques along the way noting the native trees and plants, and there is some scrambling the further up you get. Take a right at the trail markers for Matakana Valley Rd and continue uphill.
The view from the summit is nice and recently cleared to improve the view as at the end of 2016.
Follow the trail past the Helipad at the top and descend down through the bush. The descent starts over some steep boulders, but quickly turns into a nice bush trail, and eventually you'll emerge into farmland with great views of the coast.
Follow the markers right along the edge of the bush and down through the open farmland until you come out onto the road; go straight through the intersection and along the gravel road until you reach the Pakari Campsite and then the beach.
