Description

While impressive viewpoints of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison abound, there are few places where visitors can peer into the deepest part of the canyon. In order to reach this spectacular viewpoint, visitors will have to exert a bit of effort by heading out on a mile-long trail. The rewards are well worth the effort, however.

From Warner Point, the Black Canyon descends 2,722 feet, offering spectacular views of the precambrian basement rocks that erosion has revealed. Though the Painted Wall Overlook provides the most varied views of the gneiss and pegmatites in the region, those same features can be observed at a greater scale at this viewpoint. The additional solitude that you'll have earned on the hike only adds to the reward. If you're passing through, stopping at the Warner Point Overlook may very well be the highlight of your trip!

Short Hike: Hiking out to this viewpoint requires a bit of commitment. Visitors will have to drive to the end of Rim Road before embarking on a .75 mile trail. Once you've enjoyed the views and taken photos, you'll have to hike back to your vehicle as well.

Family Friendly: If your youngsters have energy to burn and can manage the hike, there aren't many viewpoints quite like this one.
