Description

While most of the rock visible in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison can be characterized as a gneiss, few portions are quite as beautiful as the section visible from the Painted Wall View. At nearly 2 billion years old, the rocks on display at this overlook have witnessed an incredible amount of Earth's history, and their long life comes with some scars. This section of the canyon is especially scenic, as there are large bands of a different rock called pegmatite that cross the cliff face. Because of the nearly black color of the gneiss, and the pinkish hue of the pegmatite, it looks almost like the canyon walls were painted with large brushstrokes. No matter a visitors age, this sight is sure to stimulate the imagination!

Even if the geology doesn't overwhelm, the canyon itself is particularly spectacular at this point. Deeper than the Empire State Building is tall, the sheer dimensions of the canyon are incredible. From this height, the Gunnison River seems to pass by as a peaceful ribbon, well below!

Especially given this viewpoint's placement on Rim Drive, anyone passing through should invest the small amount of time necessary to reach the viewpoint.

Short Walk: To get the full effect of the scenery, visitors will want to pull off of Rim Drive and make the short hike out to the viewpoint and rim.

Family Friendly: The most dramatic views can be had just steps from the car, and the rock formations here are sure to delight the whole family.
