Description

Virginia Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Glacier, made up of a large 50 ft fall, and a series of smaller cascades that extend the length of the falls. When seen from afar, the full length of the waterfall can be taken in, and the view is spectacular.

The area surrounding the falls is densely forested, so visitors may have difficulty seeing the falls until reaching an overlook where the trees open up. The sounds of the falls often precede a visual, and this builds anticipation for the main view, which doesn't disappoint. The water thunders powerfully on its way through a narrow canyon before dropping loudly into the pool at the bottom, creating quite the cacophony in the normally peaceful forest. The density of the surrounding trees add to the feeling of ruggedness presented by the mountainous landscape. On hot summer days, getting up close to the falls is a great way to cool down, as the spray is ample and chilly.

Though many visitors turn around earlier on the trail at St. Mary Falls, you'll will still likely find yourself sharing the trail and viewpoints with others as this is still a popular destination.

Short Hike: It will take a short hike on the St Mary Lake Trail to reach the falls, and visitors will first pass St. Mary Falls and Unnamed Falls on the way to this scenic spot.

Family Friendly: Not far from the trailhead and featuring multiple waterfalls, this is a great route for the whole family.
