A journey to Grinnell Glacier can take as little as half a day, or as long as multiple days, depending on your route choice. This incredible glacier can be accessed by foot which is a bit slower or by boat which trims down the time spent journeying to the area.

It is recommended that visitors take the longer hiking option, as the trek up to the glacier is part of what makes the area so spectacular. Almost all of Glacier National Park is remote, though this region especially will make you feel as though you've left civilization behind. Just because you're leaving civilization doesn't mean that you'll be alone on the journey, as this is a popular destination and is accessed via some of the easier trails in the park. No matter who you share the trail with, the terrain is rugged, offering incredible rocky vistas and beautiful high alpine scenery.

Along the way, there are ample vantage points to take in views of Grinnell Lake, Angel Wing, and Mt. Gould, and visitors will begin their journey by passing Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes. Wildlife is frequently seen in the area, including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and grizzly bears. This is prime bear habitat, and visitors should be well equipped with bear spray.

Grinnell Glacier itself is well worth the effort it takes to visit. While in significant retreat, visitors can still make their way to the ice edge, and can witness the glacial lake located at the foot of the feature. Towering rock walls and unique turquoise water enhance a visit to the area, and make for a scenic stop. Take your time once you've reached the glacier and have a picnic near the Glacier Overlook or explore the surrounding area.

Half-Day Hike: Visitors will either need to embark on a significant hike or access the area via two boat journeys and a shorter hike on the Grinnell Glacier Trail.

Amazing ranger led hike. Spectacular even in the rain. Take the time to hike across the lake shore to touch the glacier itself.
