Description

The Long Point Overlook offers spectacular views of the New River Gorge below, as well as the famous New River Gorge Bridge - the longest single steel span bridge in the western hemisphere. Completed in 1977, the New River Gorge Bridge became a stunningly beautiful fix to a monumental transportation problem. Before its construction, travelers spent almost an hour driving from one side to the other, winding their way down steep switchbacks on the New River Gorge's precarious mountain roads. However, with the construction of the bridge came a cut in travel time to one minute.

Now on the National Register for Historic Places, the New River Gorge Bridge will continue to inspire visitors to the New River Gorge National River both as an engineering marvel, as well as a thing of beauty, for many years to come.

Short Hike: This gem is located just 1.6 miles from the Long Point Trail Parking Area.
