Overview

Allegan State Game Area is a 50,000 acre forest that attracts campers, hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, horse trail riders, and hunters. The area designated as the mountain bike trails are shared with skiers in the winter.

This trail network is located in west-central Allegan County, Michigan. The area around the State Game Area is similar in many respects, being predominantly wooded and rural in nature, with some pockets of agriculture mixed in. No large communities are found in this portion of the county.

Local Info

There is a large network of trails in this area that are all relatively flat and sand/dirt covered. This is in the forest so the trees are plentiful. A lovely, very clean creek runs through the campground with rocks on the north end and a shallow sandy bottom on the south end. The campground at Silver Creek Park is perfect for tent and hammock campers and a great place for road bike riders to stay.

Visiting Tips

November 15-30 is deer hunting season. It is best to not hike or ride your horses in this area at that time.

It's also close to Ely Lake Campground, so you can easily make a long weekend traveling through unfamiliar territory.

Eastern Hognose Snake aka "puff adder" crossing the trail in the fall. When confronted, the hognose snake will suck in air; spread the skin around its head and neck, hiss, and lunge pretending to strike. Despite the show, hognose snakes almost never bite.
