Family Friendly Well marked by signs and blazes, mostly wide and fairly flat. A few small bridges over narrow creeks, large boulders to climb on, and downed trees scattered throughout—kids love stuff like that.

Overview

This loop is fairly quiet, except the stretch along Courthouse Road. This hike is great for families and those looking for a hike that is not too strenuous. The terrain is mostly flat or gently sloping, punctuated by occasional small streams and short but easily negotiated "up and downs."

Need to Know

Stop by the Five Forks Visitor Center and pick up a free trail map, also a restroom here along with knowledgeable park rangers that can fill you in on the history of the battles fought here.

Description

There are a couple of connector trails which are not shown on this map allowing one to shorten the loop if desired. Be forewarned—this is also a bridle trail, meaning horses. Riders are SUPPOSED to clean up after their animals, but they don't here. just watch your step. This is also a bike trail; however I have never encountered any bike riders here.

Follow the Pine Rock Trail to its junction with Ford's Trail. Take Ford's Trail as it parallels Courthouse Road, heading south. Ford's Trail ends at Pegram Trail which will veer west, away from Courthouse Road. When you reach Corse Trail, turn south to return to the beginning of the loop.

Flora & Fauna

Typical for the area. Good mixture of pines and hardwoods, occasional flowers in the spring and summer. If you go in warm weather, the spiders here LOVE to stretch their webs across the trails—watch where you're going and please try not to disturb them.
