Description

This is the first (lower) section of Snowbird Creek Trail. It follows Big Snowbird Creek on the left bank (hiking upstream) without crossing the creek.

Near the end of this section, you'll come to Big Falls with an upper and lower falls. A steep trail (usually marked with surveyors tape) drops 40 feet to the stream, providing access to these falls. Sassafras Creek Trail #65, which joins Snowbird Creek Trail, provides access to nearby Sassafras Falls.

After crossing a footbridge at the end of this section of Snowbird Trail, there are trail signs which provide directions to continue upstream on Snowbird Creek Trail. This next section of Snowbird Creek Trail requires repeated stream crossings or using the Middle Falls Trail (Snowbird Alternate Trail 64A) without the crossings. The alternate trail ascends steeply. Either route will lead to beautiful Middle Falls.

This was a gradual uphill to big falls. The rhododendron were pretty but this was a long hike to get to the fun sections of the trail.
