Overview

This is a scenic loop that heads through dense woods to a small but memorable waterfall. I found that hiking the loop later in the day gives you the best chance of seeing Roosevelt Elk in Elk Meadows.

Description

Trillium Falls Trail is a nice, shorter hike through a second growth and old growth redwood forest which offer plenty of shade making it a great option for a midday hike. The trail starts from the Elk Meadows Day Use parking area. Start from behind the restrooms and hike down the paved bike path. Soon you'll see a sign directing you to Trillium Falls Trail.

The trail is not marked except for an occasional wood post and arrow pointing the direction, but it is well-worn so you shouldn't have any trouble finding your way. The hike is a little less than 3 miles and has an elevation gain of just over 500 feet.

About one third of the way into the Trillium Falls Trail (if you started the loop counter clockwise) you'll reach Trillium Falls. It is not a very large waterfall at all but it is a pretty cascading fall set back in a moss and fern gully. There is a bridge directly in front which give a great location to view it from. This is also a nice platform for a tripod. Due to the tall trees, there wasn't much light. Fortunately I had a small tripod for my camera and it worked out well.

I did this loop in late afternoon and didn't see a single person. The highlight of this hike was the peaceful setting and visiting Trillium Falls. Overall, it was an enjoyable hike that I would do again.
