The trail begins at the intersection of the Mushroom Rock Trail and the trail to Inspiration Point. As the trail wanders along through the burned forest, views open up of the Chiricahua Mountains, craggy hills, and the plains of Arizona, as well as a few rock spires. Further along the trail, more spires (looking like oddly-shaped pieces of art) appear in peek-a-boo views.
After hiking 1.0 miles, the Big Balanced Rock appears on left. This is impossible to miss; the rock is massive and reminiscent of an enormous water cooler. You are now in the Heart of Rocks area, and the spires nearby are very impressive.
Continue a short distance to the junction with the Heart of Rocks Loop and Sarah Deming Trail; this is the official end of the Big Balanced Rock Trail.
