Description

You can start this trail from either from Highway 291 near the Little Spokane River bridge or from Painted Rocks. A Discover Pass is required. Enjoy the river valley scenery along the river section, hike to viewpoints over the Little Spokane River, and then get ready for more uphill to a view toward Lake Spokane.

The trail goes through a forested valley on the north side. The Indian Painted Rocks parking area features some petroglyphs. The trail here is mostly level and close enough to the river for views of river turtles, bald eagles, wild turkeys and maybe a moose.

The Knothead Trail is a mix of an old road and singletrack trail and involves a steady climb and descent when hiking in either direction. Deer are often spotted, and there are good views along the way. There is an optional spur trail out to a viewpoint over the Little Spokane River Valley.

There were 3 deer on the trail back - not minding us a bit.
