Family Friendly While the hills may be difficult for very young children, the area is mostly open and free for hiking and seeing a long distance!

Overview

If you're visiting Wind Cave National Park in the hopes of viewing wildlife, this trail is an excellent choice. While bison tend to be one of the park's main attractions, lesser seen elk can often be found in the area surrounding this trail. The route is mostly moderate, but there are more strenuous portions.

Description

This lovely trail leads visitors up and over a ridge. Grades are fairly gentle however, and the views are well worth the effort of climbing the ridge. This area is quite popular with many native species, and you'll have some great opportunities for wildlife viewing. There are plenty of other signs of animal traffic such as footprints and droppings. Keep an eye out not to step in any! It's especially important for visitors to be careful of bison.

The trails and the surrounding area are both pretty dry. You'll want to bring plenty of water and sunscreen as there is little cover.

Flora & Fauna

Bison, rabbits, antelope, prairie dogs. TONS of animals during the warmer months (April-September).

Trail cycles through the rolling hills. It was exciting to scout over each ridge for animals. 5.3mi

A lot of tracks and scat but didn't see any wildlife. The end of the trail is very anticlimactic with just a post that says "End of Trail" 4.8mi — 1h 32m

Beware of Buffalo. Lots of Buffalo poop and lots of blind ridges where they could be hiding. — 1h 00m
