Need to Know

Trails are free and open to the public during daylight hours. White donation boxes are located on the kiosks in camp. Kiosks hold trail maps and additional information. Dogs must be leashed.

Description

Most hikers prefer to start the trail from the Frances Andrew's trail located near the outdoor amphitheater. By starting from this direction, you get to go down the big hill, instead of ending your hike by climbing up it.

At the bottom of the wooded hill, the trail winds along the shoreline of Big Devils lake where it meets a footbridge. Then the trail meanders through the woods and onto a second footbridge at the end of the Twin Lakes.

The trail ends (or starts) at the Vole Trail on the edge of the prairie. Follow the vole trail west to get back to the parking area.

Flora & Fauna

Spring wildflowers like: hepatica, bloodroot, spring beauty, bishops cap, and more. Towering oaks, maples and pines along with birch and aspen fill in the forest. Along the water, birds include green and blue heron, loon, wood ducks, mergansers, kingfisher and on land and trees: sandhill crane, eagle, osprey, shrike, golden winged warbler, bluebirds, indigo bunting and more! In the prairie native grasses and wildflowers are in full show by August.
