Overview

A super fun hike that tours Mt. Tom and the grounds of Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park.

Need to Know

Parking is free at the Billings Farm and Museum across the road from the park. There are restrooms in the visitor centers.

Description

Begin the hike close to the National Park Visitor Center. Follow the carriage road beyond the forest center. Go past the first road on the left. Turn left at the second road and climb the hill. Turn left at the next road and keep climbing the hill.

Turn right at the sign for the North Peak/Precipice Trail. Now the trail becomes a singletrack. At the next intersection, take the North Peak Trail. Meander through the forest to the next intersection, the one less traveled trail. Turn left. Continue to climb until you reach the North Peak Trail again.

Turn left and continue climbing until you reach the Billings Trail. Turn right to continue following the North Peak Trail. There is a very limited view at the top of the North Peak. Look for the sign leading to Mount Tom Road. Follow the trail to Mount Tom Road. Turn left on Mount Tom Road and follow the road up to the South Peak Overlook. Stand at the South Peak Overlook and enjoy the amazing view!

Next, look for the Faulkner Trail and make your way down to the valley below. Be careful at the top, it is very steep. Follow the switchbacks down into the forest. When you reach the bottom of the trail turn left onto Mountain Avenue and enjoy the beautiful homes in the neighborhood.

Turn left on River Street. Hike past the cemetery and look for the sign that will lead you back to the visitor center in the national park. Turn left and hike up the very steep carriage road. Make your way back to the visitor center to close the loop. Pat yourself on the back because you are finished!
