Need to Know

Bring bear spray! Yellow Stone's problem bears, including Grizzly Bears, are brought to this area for release.

Description

This trail is shared with horses which means you should give them the right-of-way and that the creek crossings feature nice, heavy bridges

From the parking lot, head up switchbacks through thick coniferous forest. After the first mile you slowly drop down toward the creek.

Once you cross the creek, the trail stays about the north bank of the creek occasionally coming back down to the water.
At a little under 3 miles you enter the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.

Once you get to 5 miles you pass the North Fork Hellroaring Trail #110 on your right. At this point there is a rock hop across the North Fork to continue on with the trail.

Continue through the now, more open forest. The trail gets steeper for the next mile or so.

The trail then flattens out a pass through an open alpine field where you see the Gallatin Peak and Jumbo Mountain rising about you.

Soon you another creek crossing and the trail gets steeper. Pass the Gallatin Peak Trail #189 and make your way up switch backs in thick forest.

As you ascend, the landscape finally becomes more sparse and alpine, eventually finishing at Deer Lake Trail #481.
