Overview

This is the perfect 10k hike— it is never crowded, and it has great views. The middle three miles are fairly flat and overlook the prairie and the entire Judith Mountain Range.

Need to Know

Parking is free at the BLM access point. Restroom also available. Judith Mountain Lodge is adjacent to BLM access and is often open evenings and weekends for a post-hike refreshment!

Description

This loop can be done either clockwise or counter-clockwise. When hiking counterclockwise (as mapped), the first 1.5 miles are uphill and challenging, the middle 3 miles are mostly flat and scenic, and the final 1.5 miles are downhill (if hiking in the other direction, the elevation profile is very similar).

There is a bathroom in the parking lot, and no water on most of the trail. There are a few rocks to dodge on the western half of the loop. There is a side-trail to an overlook the city of Lewistown. The 10k loop doesn't include this section, but if you want to add on some additional mileage, you can take this trail. This adds another mile total to the hike.

The trail is usually snow-free by late April. Along the loop, you'll enjoy scenic views of the Judith Mountain Range.

Flora & Fauna

Black bears are occasionally seen here, as are deer and elk. Grizzly bears are not present in the Judith Mountains.

History & Background

This is a fairly new trail, except for the Judith Peak Overlook portion.

Attempted to trail run the loop. Still quite a bit of snow in the Judith Mountains. Went to the overlook and back. Cloudy and couldn't see Lewistown.
