Overview

This is a great hike from Abroad Village (Vila do Abraão) to Lopes Mendes beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. The first part is to Palmas and Pouso beaches and the second part leads to Lopes Mendes beach.

Need to Know

There is no construction in Lopes Mendes Beach. Bring your own food and beverages. In high season, there may be people selling soda, juices, beer, water and sandwiches.

Description

The trail starts at the southeast edge of Abraão Village. From the eastern end of the town's main Street, R. Getulio Vargas, continue walking east along the beach (to the right when facing the water) until the sand ends at some rocks and buildings. The trailhead is at the back edge of the beach there, marked with a thatched-roof sign for trail T10 a few meters up the path.

The trail starts with a singletrack through preserved and very dense Mata Atlantica forest. At the first summit (200m gain and 2km after the beginning), hikers can see Angra and Ilha Grande Bay.

There are a lot of roots along the trail which makes it possible to hike even in rain season. In some parts, large rocks or fallen trees must be crossed to continue on the trail.

The first beach you'll reach is Palmas where it is possible to refuel water/food from local vendors. Hikers will get there about 3km from the start of the hike. At the other end of the Palmas beach, the trail starts again (the same Trail T10) to Pouso (or Mangue) Beach.

After another 2 km with an altitude gain of 68m, you'll arrive at Pouso (or Mangues) Beach. This beach is slightly less developed than Palmas but still has some vendors and food shacks, as well as boat taxi departures.

Trail T11 starts just before the far end of the second beach, marked with signs for both the trail number and Lopes Mendes. In this final section of trail, you'll again treck up and down, a little bit more than 67m of altitude gain along its 1km length. Most boat transports to Lopes Mendes actually drop off passengers at Pouso, so this final section may be more heavily trafficked as well. This trail will bring you to Lopes Mendes Beach, a complete preserve with native forest, several kilometers of white sand beach, and blue water.

After enjoying your time at this beautiful spot, simply return the way you came. Alternatively, you can hike just the T11 stretch back from Lopes Mendes to Pouso, then catch a boat transport from there to Abraao at regularly scheduled times throughout the afternoon.

Flora & Fauna

Mata Atlantica (secondary forest) is well preserved on the whole island. Squirrels and tropical birds are always close to the trails. After rains, snakes are also expected.

History & Background

Lopes Mendes used to be populated but it was close to the presidium (closed to demolished since 1980s) and due to security reasons, Lopes Mendes was abandoned and left almost untouched.
