Description

Mount Sneffels' Southwest Ridge is a well-worn Class 3 scramble that offers a superb alternative to the standard Lavender Col ascent. The route begins at Blue Lakes Pass, accessible from either Blue Lakes or Yankee Boy Basin, and follows the major ridgeline.

The climb initially skirts a number of rock pinnacles and follows a system of couloirs that parallel the ridge. There is some loose rock and hands-on climbing necessary, including a few moves where those without climbing experience may wish to rope up.

At a major notch in the ridgeline, the route drops into a gully that will typically contain snow well into July or longer.

After exiting the notch, the route follows solid rock with easy climbing up to the summit. The airy exposure and fun climbing on the upper part of the route makes for an exhilarating finish.

Descend the same way, or by using the Lavender Col route.
