Family Friendly Will depend on the endurance of the kid in question, but this is a very safe feeling trail.

Description

Starting at the picnic pavilions near the day use area (as shown on this map) follow the sign for the Beach Day-Use Trail until you come to an intersection of paths. Turn either left or right and follow the well-cleared tail with red blazes. Alternatively, start at the Gorge Run Trailhead near the park's entrance.

Follow the red blazes around the path, but watch out for two tricky parts, both on the southeast side of the trail. At one point, the Gorge Run Trail intersects with the Interpretive Loop. For some reason the blaze for the Interpretive Loop is red, and the Gorge Run Trail switches to green. If you miss this change, don't worry. The trails come back together. The second intersection that is easy to mess up is when the Meeting Room Trail meets the Gorge River Trail. The blazes are orange and red respectively, so it is easy to roll right on by without noticing you've missed your turn.

Enjoy a variety of ecosystems as you parallel the river and wind around lakes and then trek up into the infamous Louisiana mountains (elevation gain under 500'). Trail material ranges from sand to compact dirt, but is mostly gravel.
