While this route is long, hikers are sure to enjoy their time meandering through the Swiss countryside. The route can be taken in either direction, but this journey begins in the south and heads north, traversing a scenic and historic valley.

You'll begin your journey near the Verzasca dam. This means that the first leg of your journey will follow the clear blue waters of the reservoir. The scenery throughout this portion of the hike will be difficult to beat, but press on through rolling terrain.

Soon, you'll have left the reservoir behind you, and you'll be making your way alongside the Verzasca River. The river's clear waters and soothing sounds will be a delightful distraction from the manageable, but noticeable, uphill grade. There are a few steeper sections that will get your heart rate up, but you'll mostly be able to enjoy the trip.

Be sure to take your time along the way, as there are many captivating sights. Known locally as the "Art Trail," this route passes through multiple quaint villages with historic churches, holy markers, beautiful bridges, and many art installations. Created to showcase and celebrate the history of the region, the Art Trail is a perfect blend of history and contemporary art. You'll notice that some installations have withstood the test of time, while others are slowly being reincorporated back into the natural surroundings.

As you continue on your way, you'll resume your gentle climb. Enjoy your journey as you pass more scenic villages and cross bridges that have stood for centuries. The splendor of the natural world will never be far removed, and if you're feeling overheated you can rest by the cool waters of the river.

Once you've reached your final destination in Sonogno, take in the local fare and enjoy the sights! When you're ready to head back, know that you can either hike or take a bus for the return trip.

You'll be treated to a variety of riverside shrubs and trees, and you may even see fish or perhaps a wolf in one of several wolf traps set along the way.
