Description
The Billy Creek Trail can be accessed via the Mike Carroll Soccer Complex off of Peterson Drive, or via the Briarwood Forest trailhead (no parking unless on the street) off of Timber Lane. For this review, we start at the soccer complex.
At the trailhead heading north, you immediately pass under a railroad bridge over Billy Creek. This area can get quite muddy after heavy rains. Around 1/4 mile on you'll pass under another bridge this time under West Park Road. The trail then meanders the eastern boundary of the Elizabethtown Sports Park. The ESP is one of the premier baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and football parks in Kentucky and has put Elizabethtown on the map as one of America's fastest growing sports tourism cities in the Midwest/South.
Once through the park area, and around the 1-mile mark on the trail, you'll pass under a third bridge at Saint John's Road. Use caution here because it is always muddy and there is a very limited amount of dry space. Continue along Billy Creek for the remainder of the trail and enjoy the sites and sounds that only a creekside hike can bring.
At approximately the 1.5-mile mark you'll have access to two pedestrian bridges used to cross Billy Creek where you can continue your journey for another 1/2 mile along the
Briarwood Forest Trail.
Flora & Fauna
Best times to use are spring and fall. There are beautiful buds and flowers in the spring, and the local color blazes during the fall. Keep an eye out, and you'll see tons of deer, raccoon, and other animal tracks.
