Overnight trips require a wilderness permit year-round. No permit is needed for day use. Quota season runs from May 1 to November.

Overview

Cirque Lake Loop showcases some of the best alpine scenery in the Southern Sierra, featuring high-altitude lakes, rugged mountain passes, and sweeping granite landscapes. Starting from the Cottonwood Lakes Trail just outside of Lone Pine, California, the route takes hikers through foxtail pine forests, across alpine meadows, and over dramatic ridgelines. With challenging climbs and rewarding vistas, this route is ideal for experienced hikers, backpackers, and ambitious trail runners.

Need to Know

Permits are required for all overnight trips. Search recreation.gov for more info. Ample parking is available at the Cottonwood Lakes Trail, but it fills up quickly on weekends and holidays. The road to Horseshoe Meadow is typically closed from November to May, with water spigots turned off as early as October. Store all food, trash, and scented items in bear-proof lockers at the trailhead. Vault toilet available.

Description

From the Cottonwood Lakes Trail, follow the well-maintained Cottonwood Lakes Trail as it gradually climbs through forests and meadows. After a few miles, take a short detour to Cirque Lake, a secluded alpine lake tucked beneath towering granite cliffs.

Rejoining the main trail, continue toward New Army Pass, a steep but well-graded ascent with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Descend into the Rock Creek drainage, then connect with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), heading south along rolling ridgelines with expansive vistas. After crossing Cottonwood Pass, descend toward Horseshoe Meadows, where the route reconnects with the Cottonwood Lakes Trail to complete the loop.

Flora & Fauna

This route features a variety of plants and animals, including foxtail and lodgepole pines, alpine wildflowers, sagebrush, and willow-lined meadows. Wildlife includes marmots, pikas, mule deer, black bears, and bird species such as mountain chickadees and Clark's nutcrackers.
