Description
This trail passes over the Portneuf Mountains through the saddle between Haystack Mountain and Bonneville Peak. This ridge is a geological marvel, with stunning bands of rocky cliffs abounding along the ridgeline. The trail is pretty steep and rocky, which makes for difficult hiking in many places. However, your hard work will be rewarded with great views. From the saddle, you can climb Haystack or Bonneville peak by going either south or north. You can then descend to the opposite side of the range or return from where you started. Either end provides you with an easy start. The east end is accessed from Big Springs Campground and the west end is accessed via Robbers Roost Canyon. This end will require a few miles of hiking along the Lower Robbers Roost Trail and the Boundary Trail to access the west trailhead.
