Need to Know

There is no fee for hiking and biking. There are signs that indicate "No Vehicles", but that is referring to ATVs and motorcycles, not bicycles.

Description

This trail has lots of different natural surfaces, wear your waterproof boots for this one. As you start into the trail, the first two small dunes you go over are quite sandy and loose, but as you get further into the hike, the trail surface firms up with some clay and silt mixed in. This area has had trouble with ATVs and motorcycles over the years and I'm guessing they have torn through the clay cap and exposed the sand.

In the middle of the hike, you'll find a whole field of dense briars which the park board identified as wild blackberry vines! I'm excited to explore this area closer to when they'll be ripe this summer! As you continue on, the trees will get bigger and you'll be in among many large cottonwoods and some potentially muddy ground from the lake...I'm guessing the water table is quite shallow here.

This path ends at the north end of the fishing lake and if you have a state fishing license, you're good to go for fishing!

Flora & Fauna

Deer, coyote poop EVERYWHERE, rabbits, snakes, raccoons, armadillos.

Someone has been busy...

This section looks like it was recently groomed and there were lots of cut branches stacked and blocking the view of the lake. Hopefully those will be removed soon.

This is a transition area from woods into a huge briar thicket! Very interesting habitat that protects small animals. I'm working to identify the briar species.

This is a great place to relax on the lake.

One of the less sandy areas on the trail; the surfaces vary between this and sandy, so wear proper hiking boots.
