Overview
Explore beautiful terrain and enjoy views as you wind through countryside dotted with ruins, kalderimi, and historic trains.
Description
Begin near the church of Ano Gatzea. A concrete road ascends a short distance before turning into a kalderimi. Head out of the village above a small stream. You reach a railway bridge (these bridges were built at the end of the 19th century). Keep heading straight following red dots on the stones. A little later, after an ascent, you can look our toward the coast to enjoy some views.
Continue to follow a series of concrete roads and kalderimis, follow the red marks that indicate the way.
About a mile in, you'll reach an earth road that you'll follow of almost another mile through groves of olive trees. At an olive tree in the middle of the road, take a left to follow an earth road. Here you'll have olive trees on the left and cypress trees on the right—you'll still catch glimpses of the hidden orchards behind them through the branches though. Near a high point, enjoy a beautiful view over the Pagasitic coast-line in the direction of Kato, Gatzea, Kala Nera and Afissos.
As you descend, you'll pass more olive groves, small sheds and open space with a square irrigation pond. From here you'll descend to the railway track. Turn left and follow the track back to Ano Gatzea. You have nice views of the town and coastline as you hike, crossing and passing stone bridges and passing through tunnels along the way. Turn around at the second bridge and head down the hill just before backtracking through the tunnel on a kalderimi which turns to a path. Navigate your way back to the church.
