Overview
If you're favorite TV channel is Animal Planet, this is the hike for you. With bird species in the hundreds flocking through this area, not to mention the presence of beautiful deer, bison, and prehistoric looking alligators, Paynes Prairie is the perfect spot for nature lovers to come out and experience what the Florida landscape has to offer. Unlike other local hiking areas that deal in grassy (often marshy) prairie, this area is primarily wooded and houses a beautiful population of palmetto and loblolly pines.
While the entire loop as mapped ticks over 8 miles on trail, those looking for a shorter experience can simply create an out-and-back on the trails of their desired length.
Description
Starting at the parking area off the eastern shore of Lake Wauburg, this hike follows the
Lake Trail as it makes its way north through dense forest. Eventually the
Lake Trail reaches a junction with the
Jackson's Gap Trail. Bear right at the junction to continue on the hike. At the next junction, the hike heads left to follow the
Chacala Trail, ultimately looping around to the same junction from before.
Once you've made the loop and enjoyed the area's wildlife to your heart's content, simply head back along the
Jackson's Gap Trail and
Lake Trail to reach the parking area.
