Description

This route continues along the Bennett Hills Road, a nice, wide dirt road. The surface is pretty soft, but good for hiking. The road follows Little Canyon Creek on the south side and Little Camas Creek on the north side. Both are nice streams that create lush, riparian habitats, full of vegetation and wildlife.

This area is a great spot for beavers, moose, deer, and elk. This section has a lot of private property on both sides of the road, so if you want to do any side excursions, make sure you are on public land. Stay off land marked private.

One incredible part of this section is that a local rancher has placed dozens of birdhouses on fence posts along the road. Numerous mountain bluebirds use these houses during their migration northward, and other birds use them during the summer and fall. It is a highlight of this section to see the hundreds of lovely songbirds that inhabit this area.

The trail eventually meets up with US 20 and follows the highway for a few miles. Use caution when crossing the highway and hiking alongside it. The shoulder is ample for hiking, but you never know when drivers are driving too fast around corners. Be aware of your surroundings.
