The Androscoggin Valley is bounded by the larger peaks. This is a smaller peak, lower and closer to the river. It's a great day hike for small kids or a nice time-trial for visiting ultrarunners. The fastest known time for the ascent is 13:26. Go to it!
From the trailhead along Shelburne
's North Road, hike an easy 0.3 miles along the Austin Mill Brook Road
to the junction with the Yellow Trail
. From here, your warm-up is over! The trail climbs through pine and beech forest getting increasingly steep with roots and rocks until you emerge on the summit ledges. Views of Shelburne
, the Androscoggin Valley, and northern Presidentials greet you.
This is a great time-trial for those who think they've got pretty good mountain hiking skills, or an even better challenging hike for children from ages 2-10. The views at the top are a great reward. About 0.1 miles past the junction on the Yellow Trail
is a set of huge boulders which are very fun to explore.
Flora & Fauna
Lichen and ferns abound.
