Need to Know
If you plan to stay in gites/refuges along the way, be sure to book a bunk in advance and bring cash for food.
This is a multi-day backpacking route that will take you to some of the island's most scenic vantage points. You'll pass Dos d'Ane, through Cirque de Mafate, over Col de Taibit, through Cirque de Cilaos, up to the Refuge de Caverne Dufour at the base of Piton des Neiges
, down to La Plaine des Cafres, up to Pas de Bellecome with views of Piton de la Fournaise, along the ramparts, and finally down to Saint Philippe. There are hikers' gites/refuges along the entire route so you could avoid carrying a lot of food, water, or camping equipment. Sections of this trail can be very rocky, muddy, slippery, or beautifully smooth.
