Need to Know

This trail may be obscure in spots, particularly when the vegetation is in full growth during the summer.

Description

This trail leaves the Silver Star Trail #180 and winds its way over Point 4086, across a saddle, and up onto the open, treeless, rocky ridge on which sit the pits. These are deep depressions created on the open slope by rearranging the rocks found there.

Though clouded in mystery, it is believed these pits dug from the rockslides were used as vision-quest sites by young men, hunting blinds, or food storage areas. Similar features are commonly found throughout the Columbia River Gorge.

The views from the ridge are also fantastic—on a clear day you can see Hood, Jefferson, Saint Helens, Adams, and Rainier.
