Description
The trailheads in the Thompson Creek area can be cryptic, and this one is no exception.
From the Thompson Creek Road #306, there is minimal to no sign of a trail. From the end of the road, head back downhill a couple hundred yards or so. You may see some cut logs and a slight hint of trail. Leave the road and head downhill through the grass until you get to the creek. On the other side of the creek, you'll see a very obvious trail heading up the other side. There is no sign.
Cross the creek and follow the steady singletrack up through the dark timber. You'll soon wrap around and go in and out of meadows as the grade mellows.
Eventually, you'll come to a big open meadow and will see the
Coal Basin Trail - North dropping down into the woods to the
Coal Basin Trail - South section. Hike this or turn around and descend the way you came; a great descent. This can be made into a big adventure loop:
Coal Basin Trail - North,
Coal Basin Trail - South, Dexter Park Trail #1953,
Lake Ridge Lakes Trail #2093,
Braderich Creek Trail #1952 (Tall Pines).
