Description

This is a great, mellow dirt road that climbs to the Continental Divide at Boreas Pass. Along the way, pass an historic water tank, a round house and other mining era vestiges, while connecting two iconic mountain towns.

This description begins at the winter trailhead above Breckenridge and ends in the town of Como. It only describes the unpaved portion of Boreas Pass Road. Access the trailhead from a traffic signal at Highway 9 and Boreas Pass Road on the south end of Breckenridge. Drive Boreas Pass Road until the pavement ends and park.

At the trailhead, the Baker's Tank Trail and Aspen Alley trails can be accessed. The first several miles from the trailhead pass through a large aspen grove and offer stunning views of the Goose Pasture Tarn, the Town of Breckenridge reservoir. At a large bend in the road 1.5 miles from the trailhead, pass the Valdero Trail intersection on the north side of the road. This can be used to access the midpoint of Baker's Tank Trail.

Approximately 1.5 miles further, pass Baker's Tank and the uphill end of the Baker's Tank Trail. Take this for a nice loop back to the trailhead. Two miles past the tank, pass Indiana Creek Road on the right. 1.5 miles beyond Indiana Creek Road reach the Summit of Boreas Pass. The renovated Section House which now serves as a backcountry hut, and a railroad boxcar offer site seeing opportunities.

Descend south towards Como, passing the Gold Dust Trail on the right in the first half mile. Four miles from the top of the pass, road 801 intersects on the right. Continue another 3.5 miles to a second intersection with 801 and turn left and hike the remaining 3 miles into Como, the last mile of which goes onto paved road.
