An old service trail for the Wagner Lookout, this trail climbs steeply and offers great views.

Snow will often prevent access until late spring.

Description

Connecting FS Road 2060 to the Wagner trails at Wagner Glade Gap, this rigorous pedestrian-only trail offers many excellent views of the Rogue Valley, Mt Mcloughlin, Mt Ashland and the Ashland Watershed. This trail was originally built to service the lookout at Wagner Butte. The lookout was abandoned and so was this trail. However, you can still see old red paint blazes on rocks and cutouts in some trees. You can still see horse pen area and old implements if you look around.

The winter winds and snows are often harsh on this trail with lots of downed trees. Because of snow, access to trail crews is often limited until early summer when chainsaw restrictions are in place. Expect to have to crawl over some downed trees.

If you're daunted by the out and back distance from Ashland (20+ miles depending on the route) one could plan a car shuttle with one vehicle parked at the Wagner Lookout trailhead on FS Road 22. This is still a long way from town and a proper trailhead, with some major elevation gain thrown in.

Flora & Fauna

Bear, deer, ponderosas. No poison oak.

In great shape, save for one fallen tree.
